Get Involved
Living in the residence halls provides opportunities for students to be involved in leadership roles on campus. These leadership roles can include involvement in their residence hall council, the Residence Hall Association (an umbrella organization for all residence hall council), or National Residence Hall Honorary, or involvement in paid student positions in the residence halls. Residence Life also encourages involvement in the over 500 student organizations on campus. Staff members provide programs for students in the residence halls that introduce them to different groups on campus and make them aware of all the different opportunities there are for involvement.
Hall Council
The Hall Council plans activities and programs, decides how money is spent in the hall, and makes decisions about the quality of life within the hall. Every resident has the opportunity to be involved in the decisions this group makes. HC is comprised of student officers elected in each hall. HC can provide you with the unique leadership experiences you won't find elsewhere. Many HC Officers later become Resident Advisors (RA) or Resident Directors (RD), or hold several leadership positions on campus. These positions add practical experience to your resume that will make you stand out to your future employers.
RHA
The Residence Hall Association is an organization that ensures a system of self-government and is open to all students living in the residence halls. RHA maintains communication among residence halls, promotes efficient hall government systems in the halls, communicates suggestions to the administration, and plans social and educational programs for residents. RHA, which includes all HCs, works with administrators and other campus organizations to solve problems unique to residence hall students. For more information, talk with your RA or RD Susan Wilton, Assistant Director, at susan.wilton@uky.edu.
Hall Programming
Residence Life staff coordinate over 2000 Community Building Activities for residence hall students each year! In planning these activities, staff members strive to meet specific objectives that include engaging campus and community resources, respecting and appreciating the diversity of the campus community, and participating in ways to give back through service. In fulfilling these objectives, residents are able to further find opportunities for growth outside the classroom!
